I remember so vividly where I was the day John F. Kennedy died. I was in Mrs. Hart’s class when the principal came over the PA system to announce the president had been shot. As young as we were we sat stunned unable to comphrehend the magnitude of this moment in history.

On this 45th anniversary of his passing it seems appropriate to remember not just his passing but the dream he ignited by pledging to put a man on the moon before 1970. At the time it seemed impossible, undoable and just plain crazy. The surge in the teaching of science and math that would follow would create wondrous new tools that we take for granted today, ranging from microwaves to velcro.

If anything Kennedy’s speech proved that if you can dream it, you can do it. Let’s bring that same spirit to revamping education today. We can dream it and will and must do it for our students to compete in this flattened world.

Did You Know?

I was just reviewing a video that was introduced to me at a workshop this summer called “Did You Know?” Truth is that much of the information was surprising. Whenever I feel that we can move slowly about change in education I watch this video. It reminds me how flat the world has become, how others are envious of our educational system and standard of living. They know the secret to success, a strong educational system that has high standards and the flexibility to compete in a digital world. When the Russians launched Sputnik into space they beat us into a new frontier, space. President Kennedy seized the moment early in his presidency to throw down the challenge of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade. The challenge seemed impossible but became reality before the end of the decade. It took collaboration, ingenuity and hard work to achieve the impossible. We need to put these characteristics to work to challenge our schools to stay the finest in the world. We need to see the challenges and rise to meet them. Watch the clip below. What do you think?
